Skoda India is stepping on the gas pedal in the race towards electric mobility. The Czech carmaker is exploring the introduction of two new electric SUVs, the Enyaq iV and the Elroq, in the Indian market. This move highlights Skoda’s commitment to expanding its electric vehicle portfolio and catering to the growing demand for EVs in India.
Enyaq iV: A Powerful Entry into the Indian EV Landscape
The Enyaq iV is expected to be the first of the two SUVs to hit the Indian roads, with a possible launch by the end of 2024. This spacious two-row SUV is built on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform, which is also used in popular electric vehicles like the Volkswagen ID.4 and Audi Q4 e-tron. The anticipated variant for India is the Enyaq iV 80x, boasting an impressive combination of a long-range 77kWh battery pack, dual motors for all-wheel-drive capability (generating 265hp), and a claimed WLTP range of 513km on a single charge. Additionally, the Enyaq iV 80x is said to support 125kW DC fast charging, making it a practical choice for long journeys.
Elroq: A Versatile Electric SUV Option Awaits Unveiling
While the Enyaq iV is on the cusp of its Indian debut, the Elroq is yet to be revealed in its production form. Based on teasers, however, the Elroq is expected to be a smaller SUV compared to the Enyaq iV, measuring around 4.2 meters in length. Notably, the Elroq will be the first Skoda model to adopt the company’s new Modern Solid design language, offering a fresh and contemporary aesthetic. Skoda plans to introduce the Elroq in four variants – Elroq 50, 60, 85, and 85x. Each variant will feature different battery capacities, resulting in a power output range of 168hp to 295hp. The Elroq is expected to cater to a wider range of buyers with its variety of battery pack options – 55kWh, 63kWh, and 82kWh – offering both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations. Furthermore, the Elroq boasts a claimed range exceeding 560km, making it a compelling contender in the long-range electric SUV segment.
Government Policy: A Decision that Could Shape Skoda’s EV Strategy
Skoda is currently evaluating its participation in the Indian government’s recently announced EV manufacturing policy. This policy offers significant benefits to companies that establish manufacturing facilities in India within three years and commence commercial production of electric vehicles. Participating in the program would not only incentivize Skoda’s EV operations but also help them meet the government’s upcoming Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFÉ) targets. Additionally, the policy allows participating companies to import niche EVs at a reduced customs duty rate, similar to that for Completely Knocked Down (CKD) models. If Skoda chooses not to participate in the program, they might launch the Enyaq iV in limited numbers initially.
Skoda’s Electrifying Move Positions Them for Success in the Indian EV Market
The introduction of the Enyaq iV and Elroq reflects Skoda’s commitment to expanding its presence in the burgeoning Indian EV market. The potential for local assembly and participation in the government’s EV policy further strengthens their position. With the Enyaq iV’s powerful performance and long range, and the Elroq’s variety and potential affordability, Skoda is poised to cater to a diverse range of Indian EV buyers, solidifying their place in the country’s electric vehicle revolution.
