The latest iteration of the Mercedes G-Class brings a series of updates to its powertrain lineup, marking the second refresh for this generation. Notably, mild-hybrid engine options are now available across the range, offering improved efficiency and performance. The entry-level model, now known as the G450d, sees a power increase thanks to its 3.0-litre straight-six diesel engine paired with a 48V integrated starter generator (ISG), resulting in an output of 357hp and 750Nm. Meanwhile, the G500 receives a boost in power from its 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder petrol unit, now delivering 436hp.
Exterior Enhancements:
Subtle yet effective design tweaks adorn the exterior of the G-Class facelift. These include a refreshed front bumper and radiator grille, along with refined A-pillars and a new windscreen lip. These adjustments not only enhance the vehicle’s aesthetics but also contribute to improved aerodynamics and reduced noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) levels. The addition of a lower-mounted front-facing camera provides a ‘transparent bonnet’ view, further enhancing visibility, particularly in off-road environments.
Interior Enhancements:
Inside the cabin, the G-Class receives upgrades in technology and comfort. The introduction of the MBUX infotainment system, featuring a touchscreen interface, brings modern connectivity to the forefront. Additional amenities such as temperature-controlled cup holders and a wireless mobile charger enhance convenience for occupants. Notably, keyless entry is now available, a practical enhancement achieved through meticulous engineering without altering the door handle design. The off-road ‘control center’ has also been revamped for improved accessibility to essential functions, catering to the vehicle’s adventurous spirit.
Off-Road Performance:
Despite these updates, the G-Class maintains its legendary off-road prowess. Impressive off-road statistics include a ground clearance of 229mm, a wading depth of 700mm, and formidable approach and incline angles, ensuring the vehicle remains capable of tackling challenging terrain with confidence.
Mercedes-AMG G63: Performance Refinements:
The AMG variant of the G-Class, the G63, receives its own set of enhancements. Notably, an advanced new active suspension system is introduced, designed to elevate both on-road and off-road performance. Additionally, the integration of 48V mild-hybrid technology contributes to improved efficiency without compromising the vehicle’s formidable 585hp output. Optional upgrades such as the AMG Active Ride Control further enhance the driving experience, showcasing Mercedes’ commitment to pushing the boundaries of performance and innovation.
