The All-New Suzuki e Vitara Revealed: Maruti’s EV Game Changer Arrives in 2025

Maruti Suzuki E VITARA

Today, Suzuki introduced the e Vitara in Milan, marking the global debut of its first electric SUV based on the Maruti eVX concept. This midsize, “born-electric” SUV is Suzuki’s first EV for India, entering a competitive market that includes the Tata Curvv EV, MG ZS EV, and upcoming Hyundai Creta EV and Mahindra BE 05.

Launch Details

The e Vitara is set to be a global model, manufactured at Suzuki’s Gujarat plant, with 50% of production reserved for export to Europe and Japan. Although it debuted in Italy, it will launch first in India in March 2025, following its Indian debut at the Bharat Mobility Show in New Delhi in January 2025. The European launch will follow in June 2025.

Design Highlights

The production-ready e Vitara closely resembles both versions of the eVX concept, with only minor adjustments. It retains the muscular look from the concepts, with dark cladding around the base for a rugged appeal. Key features include tri-slash LED daytime running lights, front charging ports, and a bold bulge over the rear wheel arch. The AWD version comes with 19-inch wheels, while the base models feature 18-inch alloys. The rear door handle has also moved up to the C-pillar, reminiscent of the older Swift design.

The SUV measures 4,275mm in length, 1,800mm in width, and 1,635mm in height, with a 2,700mm wheelbase for a spacious cabin and large battery pack. Ground clearance stands at 180mm, suitable for Indian roads, and the e Vitara’s weight ranges from 1,702kg to 1,899kg, thanks to its robust battery pack.

Platform and Powertrain

The Maruti e Vitara, codenamed YY8, is built on the all-new Heartect-e platform, co-developed with Toyota. This EV-specific “skateboard” platform integrates Suzuki’s eAxles, which combine the motor and inverter for optimized performance. A Toyota version of this model is expected in 2025.

The e Vitara offers two battery options: 49kWh and 61kWh. The 49kWh version delivers 144hp, while the 61kWh battery increases output to 174hp, both generating 189Nm of torque. The AWD version, called AllGrip-e, adds a 65hp motor on the rear axle, producing a combined output of 184hp and 300Nm of torque. The batteries, made from Lithium Iron-Phosphate (LFP) ‘blade’ cells by BYD, will be fully imported rather than assembled locally.

The AllGrip-e system on the AWD model includes a Trail mode, which applies braking to tires with low traction and redistributes torque, mimicking a limited-slip differential. While Suzuki hasn’t confirmed the exact range, the 61kWh battery is expected to offer over 500km on global test cycles.

Interior and Tech Features

The e Vitara’s interior is a significant step up for Maruti, with a floating dual-screen setup for infotainment and instrumentation, a sleek dashboard, and a gloss-black floating center console. Features include a twin-spoke flat-bottom steering wheel, rotary drive selector, and a blend of fabric and leatherette upholstery.

Notable features include:

  • Electronic parking brake with auto hold
  • Drive modes, including Trail mode for AWD versions
  • Hill descent control
  • Single-zone automatic climate control
  • Wireless charging and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility
  • Side and curtain airbags, adaptive cruise control, and lane keep assist (ADAS)

A new user interface powers the dual screens, offering a cleaner design and more information than the existing SmartPlay Pro+ system. The rear seats feature split-folding, adjustable headrests, three-point seatbelts, and ISOFIX mounts. The high roofline and long wheelbase suggest ample headroom and legroom, though it remains to be seen if the floor height is optimized for comfort given the underfloor battery pack.

Pricing and Market Position

Initially planned for October 2024, the e Vitara’s launch was delayed to March 2025 due to technical challenges in development. Suzuki emphasized its commitment to reliability with this model, taking time to perfect the software and systems rather than rushing to market.

The e Vitara’s starting price is expected to be around Rs 20 lakh (ex-showroom) for the 49kWh model, in line with competitors like the MG ZS EV. The 61kWh version with AWD could reach Rs 30 lakh. Efficiency will likely be a strong point, especially if the projected 500km+ range is certified on India’s MIDC cycle.with the launch of the e Vitara, Maruti Suzuki is taking a big step into India’s EV market, setting the stage for an exciting race in electric mobility.
