Skoda & Volkswagen Preparing Hybrid Launch in India by 2028

Skoda and Volkswagen (VW) plan to debut hybrid models—ranging from midsize SUVs to sedans—in India by 2028. These vehicles will be built on Skoda-VW’s upcoming IMP21 platform, an evolution of the CMP architecture that supports petrol, strong-hybrid, and electric drivetrains, and is tailored for Indian manufacturing and regulation needs.

🔋 IMP21 Platform: Multi-Powertrain Ready

This architecture is derived from VW Group’s global CMP system but optimised for India, enabling local assembly of petrol, hybrid, and electric vehicles. It is central to the brands’ compliance with forthcoming CAFE 3 fuel-efficiency norms.

🚙 Expected Models & Competitors

Hybrid versions of mid-range SUVs like the KushaqVirtusTaigun, and Slavia are in development. They’re expected to feature mild-hybrid and strong-hybrid systems, and will compete with models such as:

  • Hyundai Creta Hybrid
  • Kia Seltos Hybrid
  • Toyota Hyryder
  • Renault/Nissan Duster Hybrid
  • Honda City ein the sedan category.

🌍 Broader Strategic Shift

This move aligns with Skoda-VW India’s dual strategy to meet stricter emissions norms and diversify its portfolio as demand for fuel-efficient vehicles rises. Klaus Zellmer, CEO of Skoda Auto, has confirmed hybrids are part of the brand’s Indian roadmap.

📆 Timeline

  • Hybrid models expected from 2028, following phased platform rollout
  • Interim updates to existing models like Kushaq and Slavia expected by 2025, including mild-hybrid options, touchscreens, and safety features.

✅ In Summary

By introducing hybrid SUVs and sedans built on the localised IMP21 platform, Skoda and Volkswagen aim to balance performance, emissions compliance, and consumer demand. This initiative positions them ahead in India’s hybrid-market expansion and prepares them for regulatory shifts.
