BMW i3 Electric Sedan Unveiled: The 900km Range King is Here!

Mar 19, 2026

BMW has just sent shockwaves through the electric vehicle industry. Unveiled globally on March 18, 2026, the new BMW i3 is the second model to debut on the brand’s “Neue Klasse” platform. With a design that blends retro-cool with high-tech futurism, the i3 is aiming straight for the Tesla Model 3 and the upcoming Mercedes-Benz CLA EV.

The Headline: 900km Range & Ultra-Fast Charging

The biggest talking point is the efficiency of BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology.

  • Massive Range: The launch variant, the i3 50 xDrive, delivers a WLTP-certified range of up to 900km. This is achieved through new high-density cylindrical battery cells that offer 20% higher energy density than previous models.
  • Charge in a Flash: Thanks to an 800V architecture, the i3 supports 400kW DC fast charging. You can add 400km of range in just 10 minutes—about the time it takes to grab a cup of coffee.
  • Power Your Home: The i3 also features bidirectional charging (V2L and V2H), meaning your car can act as a massive power bank for your house during a blackout.

Performance: Meet the “Heart of Joy”

BMW hasn’t forgotten its “Ultimate Driving Machine” roots. The i3 features a new central control unit called the Heart of Joy.

  • The “Superbrain”: This system processes data 10 times faster than previous ECUs, managing the drivetrain, braking, and steering for a more responsive feel.
  • Power Output: The dual-motor AWD setup pushes out a combined 469 hp (345 kW) and 645 Nm of torque.
  • Agility: With a new five-link rear axle and a lower center of gravity (thanks to the battery being integrated into the chassis), the i3 promises to handle like a true sports sedan.

Interior: A Digital Cockpit Like No Other

Step inside, and the traditional dashboard is gone.

  • BMW Panoramic Vision: This projects vital information across the entire width of the lower windscreen, so you never have to take your eyes off the road.
  • Giant Screen: A 17.9-inch “Free-Cut” central touchscreen runs the new BMW Operating System X, featuring an AI assistant integrated with Amazon Alexa+ technology.
  • Eco-Friendly Luxury: The cabin uses high-quality recycled materials, including seat covers made from 100% recycled PET.

India Launch: When Can We Buy It?

Production is scheduled to start in August 2026 at BMW’s Munich plant, with global deliveries following in the autumn. While an official India date hasn’t been set, the iX3 SUV is expected to arrive in India by early 2027, and we expect the i3 sedan to follow shortly after, likely by late 2027.

The BMW i3 is clearly a massive step forward. It proves that electric cars can have the range of a diesel while keeping the driving soul of a BMW.
