Hyundai Inster EV Concept Car teased

Hyundai has unveiled the Insteroid, a unique concept vehicle that transforms its compact electric SUV, the Inster, into a race car inspired by video game aesthetics. The name “Insteroid” combines “Inster” with “steroid,” reflecting its enhanced and muscular design.
Exterior Design
The Insteroid features a bold and aggressive exterior that departs significantly from the standard Inster model. Notable design elements include:
- Wide Body Kit and Aerodynamics: The vehicle is equipped with an expansive body kit, a prominent roof scoop, and a substantial double-decker rear wing reminiscent of World Rally Championship (WRC) cars. The front bumper incorporates large air dams to enhance airflow, while the rear wheels feature turbo fan-like designs to improve aerodynamics.
- Pixel-Themed Accents: Consistent with Hyundai’s design language, pixel patterns adorn the roof, side skirts, and rear wing, adding a futuristic touch.
- Wheel Design: The front wheels are fitted with aerodynamic covers featuring three circular openings, whereas the rear wheels adopt a turbine-like appearance, contributing to both aesthetics and performance.
Interior Features
Inside, the Insteroid emphasizes a racing-focused environment:
- Roll Cage and Seating: A roll cage is installed, underscoring the vehicle’s track-oriented nature. Deep bucket seats provide enhanced support during high-speed maneuvers.
- Driver-Centric Controls: The dashboard is streamlined, featuring a driver’s display accompanied by essential controls. The steering wheel includes dedicated buttons labeled “Boost,” “Track,” and “Mode,” allowing for quick adjustments to the vehicle’s performance settings. Additionally, four LED dots on the steering wheel represent the letter ‘H’ in Morse code.
- Thematic Graphics: Graphics inspired by classic video games, such as Space Invader-style aliens, are integrated throughout the cabin, reinforcing the gaming-inspired theme.
Performance and Technology
While specific performance details of the Insteroid concept have not been disclosed, the standard Inster model offers:
- Powertrain Options: A base configuration with a 96hp front-mounted motor paired with a 42kWh battery, achieving 0-100 km/h in 11.7 seconds and a top speed of 140 km/h. A long-range variant increases output to 113hp with a 49kWh battery, reducing the 0-100 km/h time to 10.6 seconds and raising the top speed to 150 km/h.
- Range: The standard model offers approximately 300 km of range, while the long-range version extends this to around 350 km.
- Charging Capabilities: Both variants support 85kW DC fast charging and come equipped with a heat pump as standard.
Market Availability
The production version of the Inster, known as the Casper Electric in certain markets, is set to launch in Korea during the summer, followed by releases in Europe and Asia. Pricing is expected to start below $26,000.
Conclusion
The Hyundai Insteroid concept car serves as a creative exploration of blending automotive design with video game culture. While it remains a concept with no immediate production plans, it showcases Hyundai’s innovative approach and may influence future design directions in their electric vehicle lineup.
