Hyundai has unveiled its latest hybrid powertrain technology with the introduction of the next-generation Palisade SUV. This new system, featuring a 2.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with electric motors, delivers a combined output of 334 horsepower and 460Nm of torque. Compared to the standard 2.5-litre petrol engine, this hybrid setup offers a 45% improvement in fuel efficiency, a 19% increase in power, and a 9% boost in torque.
Advanced Hybrid Technology
The hybrid system integrates two electric motors within the transmission: one functions as a starter-generator, while the other serves as a traction motor responsible for propulsion and regenerative braking. This configuration supports both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive layouts, with the latter incorporating an additional electric motor on the rear axle. The system is designed to accommodate various internal combustion engines, delivering power outputs ranging from the low 100s to the mid-300s horsepower.
Incorporation of EV Features
Drawing from Hyundai’s E-GMP electric vehicle architecture, the hybrid powertrain includes features such as ‘Stay Mode,’ allowing the air conditioning and infotainment systems to operate for up to an hour with the engine off, provided the battery is sufficiently charged. Additional EV-inspired features include vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability and regenerative braking.
Future Applications
Beyond the Palisade, Hyundai plans to implement this hybrid technology across a range of models within the Hyundai and Kia brands, including compact and large vehicles. A version of this system, utilizing a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine, is expected to feature in the upcoming generation of the Kia Seltos.
With the debut of this advanced hybrid system in the Palisade, Hyundai demonstrates its commitment to enhancing performance and efficiency across its vehicle lineup.
