Import of Classic & Vintage cars 50 years and older now allowed

Feb 10, 2025

In a significant development for vintage car enthusiasts, the Indian government has revised its import policy to allow the importation of vehicles that are 50 years or older. This change replaces the previous restriction, which permitted only cars manufactured before 1950. As of 2025, vehicles built up to 1975 are now eligible for importation, effectively extending the permissible import period by 25 years.

Key Highlights of the New Policy:

  • Eligibility: The policy operates on a rolling 50-year basis. This means that in 2026, cars manufactured up to 1976 will become eligible, and so forth. The age of the vehicle is determined from its first registration date following the initial sale. This adjustment opens the door for the importation of iconic models from renowned brands such as Mercedes, Jaguar, Porsche, and various American muscle cars.
  • Import Requirements: While the import process is now license-free for actual users, it is not entirely free of charges. Importers are required to pay applicable customs duties, Goods and Services Tax (GST), and registration fees. Collectively, these costs can amount to approximately 250% of the vehicle’s invoice value.
  • Usage Restrictions: Imported vintage vehicles are strictly for personal use and cannot be resold in the Indian domestic market. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade has emphasized that any violation of this no-resale condition could lead to the implementation of stricter measures, such as a mandatory five-year holding period before any sale is permitted. Additionally, to be driven on public roads, these vehicles must comply with the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989.

In summary, the Indian government’s decision to relax import restrictions on vintage cars marks a significant milestone for automotive heritage enthusiasts, fostering a richer appreciation and preservation of classic vehicles within the country.
