Mercedes EQS SUV is brand’s 2,00,000th made-in-India model

Apr 16, 2025

Mercedes-Benz has achieved a significant production milestone in India by rolling out its 200,000th locally assembled vehicle—the all-electric EQS SUV—from its Chakan plant in Pune. This accomplishment underscores the brand’s commitment to the Indian market and its evolving role as a manufacturing hub for both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicles (EVs).

Production Milestone and Growth

The journey to 200,000 units reflects Mercedes-Benz India’s accelerated growth. The first 50,000 units took 19 years (1995–2014) to assemble, while the subsequent 150,000 units were produced in just a decade (2015–2025), marking a 470% increase in production rate. Notably, the last 50,000 units were manufactured in a mere 2.3 years, highlighting the plant’s enhanced efficiency and capacity.

Chakan Plant: A Hub of Innovation

The Chakan facility stands out for its versatility, being the only Mercedes-Benz plant globally that produces both ICE and EV models under one roof. With an investment exceeding ₹3,000 crore, including ₹200 crore in 2024 alone, the plant has been pivotal in localizing production to meet domestic demand. In 2022, it transitioned entirely to renewable energy sources, aligning with the company’s sustainability goals.

EQS SUV: A Flagship Electric Offering

The EQS SUV, now locally assembled in India, is a testament to Mercedes-Benz’s dedication to electrification. Equipped with a 122kWh battery, it delivers 544hp and 858Nm of torque, achieving 0–100 km/h in 4.7 seconds. The vehicle boasts an ARAI-certified range of 809 km on a single charge and supports up to 200kW DC fast charging, allowing a 10–80% charge in just 31 minutes. Its luxurious features include the MBUX Hyperscreen, a 15-speaker Burmester sound system, five-zone climate control, and Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).

Market Performance and Future Outlook

In FY2025, Mercedes-Benz India recorded its highest-ever annual sales, delivering 18,928 vehicles—a 4% year-over-year growth. The E-Class Long Wheelbase (LWB) emerged as the top-selling model, while the EQS SUV led EV sales. The company also witnessed a 34% increase in sales of top-end vehicles priced above ₹1.5 crore, driven by models like the AMG G 63, Maybach Night Series, and the new electric G-Class.

Mercedes-Benz India’s strategic focus on local assembly, sustainable manufacturing practices, and a diversified product portfolio positions it strongly to cater to the evolving preferences of Indian luxury car buyers.
