New Maharashtra EV Policy 2025: car subsidies, toll waivers explained

Maharashtra Unveils Ambitious 2025 EV Policy with Bigger Subsidies and Road Benefits
The Maharashtra state government has launched its updated Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy for 2025, aiming to fast-track the adoption of EVs with a significantly expanded budget and a suite of new incentives for private and commercial EV buyers.
Major Boost in Funding
- The government has nearly doubled its investment, allocating ₹1,993 crore to support the new policy. This is a sharp rise from the ₹930 crore allocated under the previous version.
Attractive Subsidies for EV Buyers
- Private EVs: Buyers of electric four-wheelers are now eligible for a 10% subsidy on the vehicle’s ex-showroom price. This time, there is no upper limit on the subsidy amount, making it more rewarding for those opting for premium EVs.
- Two- and Three-Wheelers: Electric scooters and autorickshaws are also covered under the 10% subsidy scheme.
- Commercial EVs and Farm Equipment: Electric goods carriers (both three- and four-wheelers), as well as electric tractors and harvesters, are eligible for a 15% subsidy on their base price.
Road Tax Relief and Toll Exemptions
- Tax Waivers: All electric vehicles bought and registered in Maharashtra will continue to be exempt from road tax and registration fees.
- Toll-Free Travel: Electric buses and private EVs can travel without paying tolls on major highways and expressways, including:
- The Mumbai–Pune Expressway
- The Samruddhi Mahamarg (Mumbai–Nagpur)
- The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (Atal Setu)
Charging Network Expansion
- To improve infrastructure and eliminate range concerns, the policy mandates charging stations every 25 km on state and national highways. This initiative is expected to ease long-distance travel for EV users.
Strong Sales Momentum
- Maharashtra has seen a rise in EV adoption. In FY2025, the state made up 12.52% of India’s EV sales, with 17,133 electric passenger cars sold, showing a 21% year-over-year growth.
Conclusion
The Maharashtra EV Policy 2025 reflects the state’s strong commitment to green mobility. With larger subsidies, zero road tax, toll waivers, and better infrastructure, the state aims to make electric vehicles a more viable and attractive choice for a wide range of users.
