Volkswagen ID Era, Evo and Aura Concepts Unveiled

Apr 26, 2025

Volkswagen has unveiled three innovative concept vehicles—ID. Era, ID. Evo, and ID. Aura—at the Auto Shanghai 2025, signaling a significant expansion of its ID electric vehicle lineup in China. These concepts are part of Volkswagen’s ambitious plan to introduce 30 new models in the Chinese market by 2027, encompassing a range of new-energy vehicles (NEVs), including plug-in hybrids, range-extenders, and fully electric vehicles.

🚙 Volkswagen ID. Era SUV Concept: Introducing Range-Extender Technology

The ID. Era SUV marks Volkswagen’s foray into range-extender technology, developed in partnership with SAIC, its Chinese joint venture. This seven-seater SUV utilizes a petrol engine solely to recharge its battery, enabling a combined driving range of up to 1,000 km. The interior layout is reminiscent of the Volkswagen Tayron, offering spacious seating across three rows.

⚡ Volkswagen ID. Evo SUV Concept: Embracing Advanced Electric Architecture

Built by Volkswagen’s Anhui-based sub-division, the ID. Evo SUV is a sibling to the ID. Unyx, itself a rebadged version of the Cupra Tavascan. However, the Evo distinguishes itself with a more conventional SUV silhouette, replacing the Unyx’s sloping rear roofline. Notably, the Evo features an upgraded 800V electrical architecture, enhancing charging efficiency and performance over the Unyx’s 400V system. Additionally, it incorporates a new zonal computing system to support a suite of digital services and facilitate rapid over-the-air software updates.

🚗 Volkswagen ID. Aura Sedan Concept: Debuting the Compact Main Platform (CMP)

The ID. Aura sedan, developed through Volkswagen’s joint venture with First Automotive Works (FAW), introduces the brand’s new Compact Main Platform (CMP), tailored specifically for the Chinese market. While specific dimensions have not been disclosed, the Aura’s design bears resemblance to the Volkswagen Bora, known in Europe as the successor to the Vento. This concept underscores Volkswagen’s commitment to offering region-specific electric vehicles that cater to local preferences and requirements.

These three concept vehicles—ID. Era, ID. Evo, and ID. Aura—represent Volkswagen’s strategic direction in expanding its electric vehicle offerings in China, emphasizing technological innovation, diverse powertrain options, and market-specific designs.
