MG Revises Free Charging Terms for Windsor EV as customers were not Happy

Mar 4, 2025

MG Motor India initially offered customers who pre-booked the Windsor EV a full year of free fast charging, aiming to ease the transition to electric vehicles by reducing operating costs. However, the company later revised this offer, capping the free charging at 1,000 kWh per vehicle for the year. This change has led to dissatisfaction among owners who anticipated unrestricted free charging during the first year.

The Initial Offer

At the Windsor EV’s debut, MG Motor India announced that customers who pre-booked the vehicle would receive free fast charging for one year at select charging partners. This incentive was designed to reward early adopters and alleviate concerns about charging costs. The initial communication did not specify any usage limits, leading many to believe the free charging would be unlimited for the entire year.

The Revision

Subsequently, MG Motor India updated the terms and conditions to introduce a cap of 1,000 kWh of free fast charging per vehicle for the year. After consuming this allowance, owners would be required to pay for additional fast-charging sessions. This amendment was not part of the original offer and has caused confusion and disappointment among customers who were unaware of this limitation.

Official Explanation

In response to customer concerns, MG Motor India issued a statement explaining the rationale behind the change:

“However, to address increasing instances of usage that exceed our fair usage policy as well as risk the health of battery due to non-recommended charging practices, we are updating a new public charging usage limit.

We encourage all MG owners to review the charging guidelines in their owner’s manual for best practices related to battery health and longevity, including mindful use of DC fast charging. We sincerely appreciate your understanding and cooperation, and we are confident that this adjustment will enable us to keep offering valuable charging benefits to our community.”

The company cited concerns over excessive usage potentially affecting battery health and instances where vehicles were used for commercial purposes, which violated the fair usage policy. The cap aims to promote responsible charging practices and ensure equitable access to charging benefits for all customers.

Customer Reaction

Many Windsor EV owners have expressed dissatisfaction with the retroactive implementation of the charging cap, feeling that the change contradicts the original promise of unlimited free charging for a year. The lack of clear communication regarding the amendment has further fueled frustration among customers.

Conclusion

While MG Motor India’s introduction of a free charging offer was initially well-received, the subsequent revision to include a 1,000 kWh cap has led to customer dissatisfaction. This situation underscores the importance of transparent communication and setting clear expectations when introducing promotional offers to ensure customer trust and satisfaction.
